ÉCU’s recent partner, Douro Film Harvest is not like other film festivals. Held in the spectacular landscapes of Douro Wine Valley, Portugal, it has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage. Its uniqueness is given by the way the festival combines films with gastronomy, especially wine and music. Films are focused mainly on the scenery of Douro and Porto and since the festival invites well-known filmmakers every year, it contributes to the country’s tourism as well as making the Portuguese culture known by the entire world.
The first edition of the festival was in 2009 and so far guests like director Milos Forman, Cacá Diegues, Stefan Ruzowitzky, the actress Andie MacDowell and also Sophia Loren have made the festival a cannot miss event!
Since it is also a gastronomy event it counts with the presence of not only filmmakers but also chefs.
The Festival will take place between the 14th and the 21st of September, 24 films will be showcased, including national premieres and an international one. This year there will be an homage to the director João Botelho, whose films constantly make references to the Douro region.
The competition is divided into 3 sections: “Wine Films” dedicated to the relation between cinema and wine; “Food Films” where food is the main character and “Curtas da Casa”, which literally means “House Shorts”. This last section, only opened to Portuguese directors, is relatively new and aims to promote projects that in some way or another are related with the Douro River and the wine region around it.
ÉCU recommends you to schedule a visit to this region of Portugal. Enjoy the films, enjoy the traditional food and mostly have loads of fun.
