One of the youngest actresses to ever receive nominations for an Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe, Saoirse Ronan has already had an extraordinarily impressive career at the tender age of twenty years old.

Ronan, with an acting style described as both eccentric and intense, came to international eminence in 2007 with Joe Wright’s film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s 2001 novel, ATONEMENT. When she was twelve, the icy-eyed Irish blonde scored the role of a precocious preteen whose false eyewitness testimony is a catalyst for radically altered lives in pre- and post-World War II Europe. Both the film and Ronan herself received widespread critical praise.

In 2008 she starred in DEATH DEFYING ACTS, directed by Gillian Armstrong, and CITY OF EMBER, directed by Gil Kenan, kicking off a trend of energetic roles in films which explore the intersections of fantasy, psychological thriller and sci-fi. The trend rolled on with Peter Jackson’s THE LOVELY BONES in 2009, in which her character is brutally murdered, then watches after her family for years from heaven. While the film received mixed to poor reviews, two years later Ronan teamed up with Joe Wright once again to play the title character in HANNA, for which her ruthlessness and raw emotion in the portrayal of a teenage assassin earned her still more international accolades.

Recently, Ronan appeared in independently spirited yet commercially successful Wes Anderson’s star-studded THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (2013), capping a highlight-strewn teenagehood.

ÉCU is now looking forward to seeing  Ronan appear for Cannes’ Un Certain Regard this month, in Ryan Gosling’s hotly anticipated directorial debut, the fantasy-neo-noir LOST RIVER, to which she will certainly be bringing her usual brand of cool intensity.
