“The Challenges of the writer/director”

Presented by: Alan Arrivée
Saturday 13:00−13:50
Le Triomphe
Price 10€

What may seem like the situation of greatest artistic control for a filmmaker can turn into an on-set nightmare without successful preparation in both the stages of writing and pre-production. Even the act of directing something you yourself have written can be a greater challenge than directing a separate screenwriter’s work. Ironically, the single vision of the ‘auteur’ is often best achieved by splitting oneself in two and demanding the same clarity that the traditional team of writer and director would automatically require. In this workshop we will examine methods and techniques that lead to the successful directing of one’s own writing. The goal here is that the final work make as much sense to the audience as to the artist, while retaining the advantages of unified vision that the writer/director has to offer.

We’ll briefly cover the basic fundamentals of licensing music for film, sync licenses versus master licenses, score versus songs, and then dive into creative ways to get music for your film with no upfront money, and discuss “back-end” deals.
