This November has been a sad month here in Paris. Despite the horrific events that took place 13th November 2015, we here in Paris and around the world must keep on keeping on. More than ever are our voices and freedom needing to be expressed and film, particularly independent film vehicles this freedom. With that in a mind a flood of films were submitted for ÉCU 2016’s Earlybird Deadline on 22nd November and we were busy making some cool little promotional videos for this deadline! Check them out, they express the spirit of our festival, independence and freedom perfectly well! But don’t worry that is not the end you can still submit your films before the Regular Deadline on 20th December. So make your voices heard and keep on sending us those films.
In November the ÉCU-ON-THE-ROAD journey took us to York in the United Kingdom for ÉCU’s partner festival, The Bafta Qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival (ASFF) from 5th to 8th November! This year was the festival’s 5th anniversary and it was truly marvellous with film screenings in beautiful, iconic locations around the historic city. The ‘Meet the Film Festivals’ event which we took part in was an immense success and was a great opportunity to meet and share with other film festival-ers! Next we travelled to Australia! From 13-15th November we spent our time at the Clare Valley Film Festival. Three films from ÉCU 2015’s Official Selection; DE SMET (dir. Thomas Geudens & Wim Geudens), THE BIGGER PICTURE (dir. Daisy Jacobs) and BEFORE THE BOMB (dir. Tannez Hazemi), two of which are award winning films were in competition at the festival! We were extremely happy and proud to hear the good news that both DE SMET and BEFORE THE BOMB were awarded at the festival! Our final stop off for this month was Beirut, Lebanon from 15th – 22nd November for the 9th edition of the NDU International Film Festival. We thoroughly enjoyed this festival where the “Power of the Youth” ethos could really be felt with a whole host of exciting and innovative films!
We explore films, we explore the four corners of the globe and we explore people. Our spotlight articles this month have focused on a diverse set of characters; the versatile Tilda Swinton, the great director Alejandro González Iñárritu, Turkish film director and screenwriter, Ferzan Ozpetek, the immensely cool Kevin Spacey and the mysterious Christina Ricci.
