Not everyone is able to make it to Paris to ÉCU’s annual film festival, so we like to take our films on the road to share some of the best Indie films Europe has to offer! Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of everywhere we’re going and where we’ve already been, so this page helps keep our fans informed!

January 27th-31st
Jaipur International Film Festival

Jaipur International Film Festival is the world’s fastest growing film festival, rocketing in size from just 148 films from 7 different countries on its first edition in 2009, to last year’s mammoth 600 films from 67 countries and over 15,000 visitors. This year, as the festival enters its fourth edition, its promises to be even bigger, with some 902 films from 70 countries, including features, shorts, animations and documentaries, including winners from ÉCU 2011 The April Chill, Paths of Hate, 27m2, The Happy Housewife, Städgata (Urban Sounds).

January 21st – 27th
International Children’s Film Festival
The International Children’s Film Festival returns to Bangladesh later this month, continuing its stated mission to “open a new world of cinema to the children of Bangladesh and to give them an exposure to culture and tradition of different countries through film as a powerful media of art.” This fifth edition of the festival, held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from the 21st to the 27th of January, promises to build on the success of previous years, with over 150 screenings showcasing the very best in features, animation, and shorts, for children, from around the world.

November 24th – 26th
AUBG Film Festival, Bulgaria
A
merican University in Bulgaria (AUBG) held its first Short Film Fest on the last weekend of November. It brought together ÉCU- The European Independent Film Festival, South Western University “Neofit Rilski”, the International Documentary and Short Film Festival (DokuFest), Early Bird Student Film Festival, and In the Palace International Short Film Festival. Scott gave a lecture at the opening, which was the highlight of the three-day event. He talked about filmmaking and showcased excerpts from the movies he made.

November 18th – 25th
The International Bulgarian Student Film Festival, Bulgaria

The 7th edition of the Bulgarian student festival takes place this November in the heart of Sofia. There will be screenings of films from England, Serbia, Croatia and many more countries that are directed by students. One of the conditions for entering this festival is that the filmmaker must not have graduated yet, which also makes it unique and interesting. Watching and discovering new talents is always a special and interesting process and therefore it is well worth participating. Besides the competition program, there will also be master classes, lectures, and meetings with prominent filmmakers, which will be held at the Student Drama Theater at NATFA, as well as a two-hour program of student films from France’s ÉCU – European Independent Film Festival.

November 17th – 19th
The Kabelvåg Kunstfilmfestival, Norway
The Kabelvåg Kunstfilmfestival is finally seeing daylight this November, after local initiatives have materialized into more than just after-party-ideas in early hours of the morning. The small village of Kabelvåg has its roots deep in the fishing traditions of northern Norway. Despite location half-way to the North Pole, the village also boasts a well-established film and art school, a photo college and a considerable amount of local artists who form a vibrant creative community. For three days in November the festival will present lectures and screenings in intimate venues in and around Kabelvåg by contributors from all around the world.

October 22nd and 29th
Academia Del Cinema Di Bologna, Italy
On Saturday, October 22th, there was a presentation and a short screening by the ÉCU Accademia Nazionale del Cinema in Bologna. The academy was founded in Bologna in 1986 and its prestigious centre is situated in the historical Palazzo Felicini. The National Academy of Cinema is not only a school but a dynamic cultural centre, which is why ÉCU has chosen to present the festival here. A short presentation by our President Scott Hillier introduced the festival to the students, teachers and all the other guests, and then there will be a screening of some ÉCU’s films. The purpose of the event, which was taking place in collaboration with Academy, was not only to promote our festival, but to offer some of the best students the chance to join the ÈCU competition free of charge.
The event was so successful that we repeated in on October 29th so more people could see our selection of films.

October 22nd
Escuela Nacional De Cine Colombia
On October 22nd, ÉCU was pleased to host a free event at the Escuela Nacional De Cine Colombia. ÉCU presented 6 of its best award-winning films from 2011, which were well received by the audience there. ÉCU was proud to present some of their entrants to an enthusiastic and receptive audience in Colombia.

October 21th – 23rd
Viewfest, Italy
ÉCU’s partner VIEWFEST in Turin, Italy, is the Italian evolution of Resfest, the successful global touring digital film festival. It is not a festival like any other. It doesn’t have a set location, instead it is a network of festivals everywhere in the world, from São Paulo to Seoul, from Amsterdam to Istanbul, with strong communication channels among all these cities. The result is a worldwide festival, which ÉCU is pleased to be partnered with.

October 15th – 22nd
The International Short Film Festival of Cyprus
Kadi, our festival manager, went to Cyprus! The International Short Film Festival of Cyprus aims to increase and accentuate the prominence of the short film genre. The primary focus of the festival in Limassol is its International Competition and National Competition. Fictional, animated shorts and documentaries up to a maximum of 25 minutes compete for the festival’s awards and prizes. In addition to the competition sections, the festival week provides an extensive range of special programmes and events that aim to educate and entertain. These include retrospectives, tributes to individual film makers and/or specific genres, children’s programmes, seminars, workshops, masterclasses and of course, parties! Read more…

October 7th-9th
ÉCU in Georgia
Over the weekend of 7th-9th October, ÉCU was honored to present “ÉCU in Georgia”. Over the weekend we showed some of our 2011 winners to an international audience in Tbilisi.
From the moment we arrived, we were very pleased to be there, in such a beautiful city, and the atmosphere was great for the whole weekend. We are very proud that we had the opportunity to project some of our films in Georgia, and would like to thank everyone who made it such a success.

September 17th – 24th
Naperville Independent Film Festival
September 17th-24th marked the 4th edition of the Naperville Independent Film Festival. The mission of the Naperville Independent Film Festival is to promote, encourage, and inspire local and international filmmakers, future filmmakers, and those passionate about the film industry, while encouraging cultural tourism and film industry development in and around Naperville, Illinois. Four years young, this bright new independent film festival brought many, many years of expertise to the spotlight for the 2011 Naperville Independent Film Festival (NIFF).
The week long festival was a great success, and ÉCU wishes their partner all the best for the future.

September 10th – 16th
10th Open Student Film Festival Russia
Open St. Petersburg Student Film Festival “Beginning” is held annually in the centre of St. Petersburg, Russia. The festival is committed to helping students gain experience, develop their contacts and promote their films as well as to encourage audience interest in the works of young filmmakers.
In addition to the competition programs the festival also offered special thematic screenings, non-competition programs, presentation programs of film schools and international student film festivals. ÉCU were privileged enough to have some of our favorite past films presented as part of this festival.

September 7th – 11th
“Handmade” was the slogan of Villa Leyva 5th International Film Festival, one of ÉCU’s new partners in Latin America.
Villa de Leyva International film festival is a space for films with an identity and movies with feet on the ground.
On the Friday and Saturday of this weekend festival, ÉCU presented some of its winning films from 2011, as part of “ÉCU on the Road.” It was a great weekend in a beautiful place, and we wish them all the best for the year to come.

August 20th – 28th
Open Cinema in St.Petersburg
The last week of summer 2011 in St. Petersburg was marked by a very special event, a festival of short and animated films called “Open Cinema”, which took place on 20th-28th August. More than 100 films from 30 countries were shown during more than thirty screenings in two cinemas and two open-air opening nights on the beach of the Peter and Paul Fortress – one of the most beautiful places in St. Petersburg and in the very heart of the city. July 20th – 24th
International Meetings in Cinema, Television, Vídeo and Multimédia – AVANCA Film Festival ’11, Avanca, Portugal
Since its debut in 1997, the “International Meetings in Cinema, Television, Vídeo and Multimédia – AVANCA ’11″ festival has steadily grown in audience turnout and its number of film submissions. Avanca has also succeeded in becoming the largest audiovisuals workshop space in Europe in the past 15 years. This year, Avanca invited ÉCU Festival Manager Kädi Lokk to the festival to serve on its jury board! Renowned for serving as an international meeting ground for cinema, television, video and multimedia, Kädi is eager to see the film talent that awaits her in Avanca, Portugal! Read more!

IN THE PALACE Film Festival, Balchik, Bulgaria
The ninth edition of In The Palace International Short Film Festival, held from June 18-25 in Balchik, Bulgaria, brought together more than 150 filmmakers from five continents. Cinematographers from South and North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa presented work in four categories: fiction, animation, experimental, and documentary. Their films were judged by a panel of notable filmmakers, journalists, and industry representatives from the United States, Romania, Croatia, Russia and Bulgaria. Read more…

“Reality Bites” Evening Event, Scuola Sentieri Selvaggi, Rome, Italy
Saturday, June 18th, 2011, the evening event “Reality Bites” was held at the Sentieri Selvaggi School in Rome, Italy. The event is held annually, and features live music and opportunities for producers and directors to share stories about their production experiences. The event also serves as a chance to close and celebrate a didactic year, meanwhile introducing future projects to come. Useful meetings are offered for students who are curious and wish to know more about the production of independent films. Read more…
