For this Friday spotlight we‘ve chosen Lithuanian film director Alante Kavaite! She was born in 1973 in Vilnius, but has been living in France for almost seventeen years. Asked why she decided to live in a foreign country, her answer was that she wanted to see a different world and a lot of her peers wanted to do the same. “Until then, we lived like in a stuffy room with all windows closed. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, it seemed that now the whole world belongs to us. I wanted to open the windows.” – said Alante Kavaite.
And the window opened: after finishing the school in 1992, she got her first role as the lead actress in film JAZZ (1992), directed by Raimundas Banionis.
In France, 2007, she made her debut as a director and screenplay writer. Mystical drama ECOUTE LE TEMPS (TIME SOUNDS) (2007), has been screened in more than twenty international festivals, including the Cinema Spring and Šeršėliafam Women’s Film Festival in Lithuania.
Alante Kavaityte’s newiest film SANGAILES VASARA (THE SUMMER OF SANGAILE), released in 2015, was awarded for the best film in Silver Crane 2015 films awards in Lithuania. THE SUMMER OF SANGAILE is about 17 year-old girl called Sangaile, who is fascinated by stunt planes. Afraid of heights, she has never dared to even enter in one of the cockpits. At a summer aeronautical show, nearby her parents’ lakeside villa, she meets Auste – a local girl of her age, who unlike Sangaile, lives her life to the full with creativity and dare.
In 2015, at Sundance Film Festival, Alante Kavaite was awarded for the best directing work in competition films in the program. THE SUMMER OF SANGAILE was also screened in the Berlinale, Panorama program.
“Creative colloborations have no boundaries“- said Alante Kavaite while talking about her work in different countries. That‘s what we love about filmmakers, you are creative and passionate about finding new ways to make exclusive films. Keep your spirit up!
