This award season all bets are off , judging from the Golden Globes, first time actors, established actors and come back acts they all have their place in the sun ! So this week we will spotlight a long awaited come back from a great actor , Bruce Dern. You may recognize the last name since he is not the only talented member of his family, Laura Dern his daughter the once David Lynch’s muse and the star of Alexander Payne’s first film Citizen Ruth.
Alexander Payne wasn’t mentioned by accident, he is the director that made Bruce Dern the talk of the town again by giving him the starring role in his newest film Nebraska. This is not Dern’s first brash with a great director , he had a part in Alfred Hitchcock’s Marnie and later his last film Family Plot. Dern would speak very highly of the director and how he would seek his help because of his ailing health. Dern had also a role in Sydney Pollack’s classic 1969 film They Shoot Horses don’t they?
From early on his career he would do film , theater and television. He gained a lot of notoriety by playing the guy that cowardly shot Jon Wayne in the back in the 1972 film The Cowboys. Some of his iconic roles include Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby and Captain Bob Hype in Coming Home for which he received his fist Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In 1983 he won the Silver Bear Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival for his role in the film That Championship Season. After that he would appear in some films and television shows it wouldn’t be until this year with Alexander Payne’s
Nebraska that people would discover or discover the talented actor. He won the Best Actor Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is nominated for every Best Actor award so far. Leonardo Di Caprio on accepting his Golden Globe award this Sunday urged every young actor out there to look up Bruce Dern’s filmography if they want to be educated in film history.
In Nebraska he plays Woody a man who thinks has won the lottery ticket and travels across the country with his son in order to collect his earnings. The film is shot in black and white and as most Alexander Payne’s films talks about family and identity. The critics have singled out Dern’s performance as the best of his career and that it might earn him the long awaited best actor Oscar.
