This week’s spotlight covers the director of BOGGIE NIGHTS, Paul Thomas Anderson. Encouraged by his father, Paul began making films at a young age. Using the money he saved from working at a pet store, he made his first 30 minute mockumentary at 17 years old.
After two semesters in college, Paul made a short film called CIGARETTES & COFFEE which connected multiple storylines using a 20 dollar bill. It went on to win the Sundance Festival Shorts Program in 1993. He decided to make the film into a full length feature and was invited to the Sundance Feature Film Program in 1994. At the festival he signed a deal with Rysher Entertainment for his first feature film, HARD EIGHT, launching his career.
He went on to directed and write BOGGIE NIGHTS and MAGNOLIA, both having been nominated at the Academy Awards. Paul worked with Adam Sandler for his next film PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE which went to the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for a Palm D’Or. He then went on to direct THERE WILL BE BLOOD based on the Upton Sinclair novel Oil!. The film went on to receive eight nominations at the 80th Academy Awards.
His most recent film released was INHERENT VICE which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Costume Design at the 87th Academy Awards. Be sure to watch all of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films!
