This Friday, ÉCU wants to give the spotlight to a philosophical film director, screenwriter and producer, who has been regarded as one of the greatest living filmmakers and whose works have received consistent praise: Terrence Malick.
He studied philosophy at Harvard University and graduated summa cum laude in 1965. Malick is famously protective of his private life. His contrast stipulate that his likeness may not be used for promotional purposes, and he routinely declines requests for interviews.
One of Malick’s works, The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chasten and Sean Penn, is a family drama spanning multiple time periods and focuses on an individual’s reconciling love, mercy and beauty with the existence of sickness, suffering and death. The film explored the origins of life on earth, premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or.
His other work, Knight of Cups (2015) would star Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman. The story is about a man who is searching for love and truth. The film premiered in the main competition section at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2015.
For now, Malick has been working for next project, titled Voyage of Time. The film is about a celebration of the Earth, displaying the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse. The film is targeted to be released in 2016. We can’t wait to see this movie!
And, here is the trailer of Knight of Cups:
