She first swept us off our feet as a straightedge high school student who manipulates the grape vine to move up on the social totem pole. In reality, this actress hardly needs help in the popularity department. Followers have dyed their hair red in imitation, and fantasized about dating her super-hero boyfriend. Now, adoring fans can look forward to seeing Emma Stone in Woody Allen’s new film, Magic in the Moonlight. Our spotlight this week features the doe-eyed actress, who seems to only get better with each role she plays.

emma stone magic in the moonlightStone was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, the daughter of golf club owners. She lived on the grounds of the Camelback Inn from the age of 12, and was homeschooled for some time during her youth. This allowed her to perform in many productions at the Valley Youth Theatre in Phoenix. As a child, Stone participated in improvisational comedy groups and starred in productions such as The Wind in the Willows, Alice in Wonderland, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She also took private lessons with a well-connected acting coach.

At the age of 15, Stone convinced her parents to let her pursue a professional acting career by delivering a PowerPoint presentation called “Project Hollywood”, the Madonna song “Hollywood” serving as background music. Luckily, Emma’s PowerPoint skills must be as impressive as her acting chops, because in January 2004, she and her mother moved to Los Angeles.

Stone made her television breakthrough playing the part of Laurie Partridge in the VH1 talent/reality show, In Search of the Partridge Family (2004). Afterwards, she had a number of other small TV roles before landing her first feature film, Superbad, in 2007.

Since 2007, Stone has co-starred in The House Bunny (2008), Zombieland (2009), and Paper Man (2009). She reached Hollywood prominence after receiving a nomination for the Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress: Motion Picture Musical or Comedy in 2010, for her lead role in the Will Gluck film, Easy A. Stone has also had notable roles in The Help (2011), and in the Amazing Spider-Man film series (2012–2014).

Set on the French Rivera in the 1920s, the trailer portrays Stone as a persuasive medium named Sophie. Firth’s character, a man named Stanley who poses as an Asian magician, is skeptical of Sophie and believes her to be a crook. He sets out to expose her, and in typical Allen fashion, professional and personal complications ensue, resulting in an unlikely romance. Magic in the Moonlight comes out in theatres July 25.
