For this Friday spotlight we’ve chosen an Italian film director Massimo Troisi (1953-1994).

He was born in Naples in 1953 and started his career as stage actor in 1969. After that, he started a film career as actor, director and screenwriter. His source of inspiration was Pasolini: “When I think of Pasolini I consider myself very little.” – said M.Troisi. Too modest for critics who considered him “savior of Italian cinema”.

In 1981, M. Troisi debuted in RICOMINCIO DA TRE (I START FROM THREE) both as actor and director. The film had a brilliant success and M. Troisi won 2 personal awards: one for the best new director and another one for  the best actor.

In 1984, Massimo showed another masterpiece NON CI RESTA CHE PIANGERE (WE CAN ONLY CRY), directed with Roberto Benigni (another famous and appreciated Italian actor). This film is about two men who, after sleeping in an inn, wake up and discover that they are in a different era; so they need to learn how to live there. The film got the highest proceeds of the year in Italy, but no awards by critics.

IL POSTINOHis last film, IL POSTINO (THE POSTMAN), still has an enormous success especially because of the situation of filming: Troisi, had heart problems and needed to be operated with urgency, but he didn’t want to leave the shooting, so decided to finish it (although with big difficulties) and some days later he died, in 1994.

He was a lover of life; “Take your life as it comes” was his lifestyle. That’s our suggestion for this Friday: never stop when everything seems difficult; go on and accept your life, always!
