We were so busy this December that we don’t really know where to begin! To start with, it is very important to us that we mention again how grateful we are for all of the films that we received for our Earlybird deadline on December 17th. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we are always so amazed by the diversity and quality of the films that we receive year after year, and we are always so honoured when you decide to send your films to our festival. We hope that we will receive even more films before our next deadline on January 14th. Remember, there is no film too weird or too quirky for us. We want to see them all!

In December there is always the tendency to look back on the year, and it would be impossible for us not to mention here all of the incredible women who spoke out against sexual harassment in the film industry. We applaud you and we salute you. It is these events that inspired us to shine our spotlight on feminist filmmaker Gurinder Chadha (whose films we believe are under-appreciated) as well as on Nancy Buirski, who is responsible for bringing to light the struggle of the Loving family. We are keen to support women filmmakers as much as possible, which is why we host an event called #She Shoots at our festival: a round table discussion where female filmmakers talk about how they’ve got to where they are in the industry. We are very much looking forward to this event at ÉCU 2018.

We also wrote spotlight articles on Anders Thomas Jensen, Chris Morris and New Zealander of the year Taika Waititi. If you fancy finishing off the year laughing your head off we highly recommend watching his film Hunt for the Wilderpeople. You could also watch Withnail and I, which is personally one of our favourites but don’t just take our word for it. Read our review and decide for yourselves if you want to watch it! If however you would prefer to end the year thinking about life, love and relationships (there is after all tendency to reflect in December!) then we suggest watching the films Personal Shopper or A Ghost Story, which we also wrote reviews for.

Overall, we have had such a great year and we are looking forward to seeing what 2018 has in store for us. See you there!
