A very happy New Year from all of us at ÉCU! This January marks the start not only of a new year but also of a new decade, with a whole host of brilliant and exciting events happening across Paris. We’ve collected some of our favourites so that you can kick off the 2020s in style…

JEAN-LUC GODARD RETROSPECTIVE, La Cinémathèque française

8 January – 1 March

Jean-Luc Godard. One of the most influential cineastes and thinkers of sound, image and cinema the world has known. He’s been making films since 1954 and, now aged 89, is still adding to his array of 200 thought-provoking films. The Cinémathèque française will be holding daily screenings of his vast film catalogue, alongside documentaries and interviews with the director, from 8th January. Not to be missed.

LA NUIT DE LA LECTURE, Libraries & bookshops of Paris

18 January

The 4th ‘Reading Night’ takes place on Saturday 18th January with libraries, bookshops and other cultural sites across mainland and overseas France opening up their collections and welcoming the public to a variety of exciting literary events, some of which extend over the entire weekend. Last year 450,000 people participated in over 5,000 events, and this year’s edition will see Paris hosting events of all kinds, including readings of works by Hélène Cixous and the late Albert Camus.

FILM MARATHON, Le Champo 

18 January, from Midnight

Le Champo is hosting one of its famous all night movie marathons… with complimentary breakfast to boot! January’s multinational offering consists of three hit films from 2019: Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, and Marco Bellocchio’s The Traitor. CHINESE NEW YEAR, events across Paris

25 January

It’s Chinese New Year with 25th January ushering in the year of the Rat. The first animal in a new cycle, the rat is traditionally associated with intelligence, prosperity and material success. There are numerous events happening across Paris and lasting for around a week, including parades, exhibitions, animations and concerts. Find out more and how you can join in here.

ART EXHIBITIONS – LAST CHANCE AND ONGOING, Centre Georges Pompidou

Throughout January

A number of exciting exhibitions are coming to a close this month at the Centre Georges Pompidou so make sure you catch them while you still can! These include a close look at Francis Bacon’s later period, a large collection of conceptual works by French artist Jean-Pierre Bertrand, and a unique exhibition of 7 artworks entitled Meeting Points. Ongoing exhibitions include a photography exhibition about Calais refugee and migrant camps, and a retrospective of French artist Christian Boltanski… plenty to see!

AWARDS SEASON, Cinemas across Paris

Throughout January

Get yourself ready for a string of great movies, including Oscar and César contenders, to be released this January! We’ve already had this year’s Golden Globes, with Sam Mendes’s 1917 taking away awards for best drama and best director, but, as well as seeing what all that hype is about, don’t forget to also pencil in dates to catch Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Corneliu Porumboiu’s The Whistlers, and William Eubank’s Underwater.
